γ-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

γ-Glutamyl Transferase, Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is a membrane-bound enzyme that plays a crucial role in Meister’s γ-glutamyl cycle, catabolizing reduced glutathione into cysteine and glycine. It anchors to the cell membrane via its N-terminus, with catalytic activity in the extracellular domain. GGT can remove the γ-glutamyl group from various extracellular substrates like proteins by cleaving γ-carboxyl bonds of glutamate. This enzyme is vital for glutathione homeostasis and mercapturic acid metabolism. Elevated serum GGT levels are significant markers for liver diseases, such as hepatitis C, cholestatic syndromes, and alcohol-related liver disease, as well as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease[1].
